Life at Himmelstein Homestead Farm

Our Story

The Himmelstein Homestead Farm located in Lebanon, Connecticut is an historical farm listed on the State Register of Historic Places. Established in 1913, the Himmelstein Homestead Farm was primarily a dairy farm until 2004. The Himmelstein Homestead Farm currently sells vegetables to local consumers and at food coops, local schools, and restaurants. Environmentally sustainable growing practices are used and the farm is a no-spray operation. The farm was permanently preserved through Connecticut’s Farmland Preservation Program to ensure its prime farmland will always be used for farming.

Meet the people behind your food

Himmelstein Homestead Farm in Lebanon has been in the same family for over 110 years. Just like two generations of family members before him, Frank cares for the land and grow a variety of crops that help feed the community. Frank went to college to study agronomy and earned a PhD in plant and soil sciences. He worked at the University of Connecticut for many years as the Extension Educator in Integrated Crop Management. Frank's specialty is growing many varieties of summer and winter squashes as well as a variety of other vegetables. Frank uses environmentally sustainable growing practices and his farm is a no-spray operation. He has worked to preserve the farm and its history forever.
