About us

Life at Muddy Roots Farm

Our Story

Muddy Roots Farm is a diversified operation established in 2016 in Wallingford, CT with a focus to bring healthy and honest produce, poultry, and pork to our local community and beyond. The land being farmed has been within the family since the 1700's and Muddy Roots Farm continues to honor family heritage and ethical farming practices. The meat enterprise consists of non-GMO pastured chicken and woodlot raised and pork. The processing and butchering of the poultry is done on the farm in a State of Connecticut Poultry Slaughter license. The vegetable operation is dynamic and sustainable with production focused on heirloom and unique varieties grown in sync with Nature. Woman-owned, Veteran-owned

Meet the people behind your food

Kirsten Marra and Chris Wellington are owners of Muddy Roots Farm. Chris is a Marine Corps veteran of the Scout Sniper Platoon and was stationed in Iraq near the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He grew up in Salem, CT and has worked in many trades over the years. His interest in farming came when he began to see the benefits of having homegrown food and reaping what he sowed. He is a member of the Farmer Veteran Coalition and Muddy Roots Farm operates under the Homegrown by Heroes label. Kirsten grew up on the farm property and her family has resided on the land since the mid 1700's. Her desire to farm did not start until a bit later in life when she would take trips to visit family in Vermont and admired their lifestyle of growing their own food and bartering with friends and neighbors. Kirsten and Chris look forward to sharing their products with their expanding community!
